Hosting a J-1 participant at your organization

Host employers and U.S. schools cannot sponsor a participant on their own. A designated sponsor reviews your organization, approves the training plan and stays responsible for the exchange, so your first step is choosing the sponsor you want to work with.

    Confirm the program category

    Intern, trainee, teacher and the other categories each set their own rules on who you can host and for how long.

    Choose a designated sponsor

    Sponsors are designated by the U.S. Department of State. Contact one that covers the program category you need.

  3. 3
    Pass the sponsor vetting

    Expect a review of your organization, a site visit or phone verification, and proof that your insurance is in place.

  4. 4
    Sign the training plan and welcome your participant

    You agree a written training or internship plan with the sponsor, and the sponsor issues the participant DS-2019.

Requirements differ from one sponsor to another, so treat this as a starting point and confirm the details with the sponsor you contact. J-1 Connect is not a designated sponsor and does not process visas.
